Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. New York State is making a major investment in the future of technology with a $300 million commitment to Stony Brook University to establish a first-of-its-kind Quantum Research and Innovation Hub. Building on Stony Brook’s leadership as home to the nation’s largest quantum network, the new hub will advance research and education in quantum communication, computing, and networking—critical components for developing a faster, smarter, and more secure internet. The 150,000-square-foot facility, expected to open in 2029, will bring together a new Quantum Institute, a hybrid Quantum Data Center, and a Quantum Education Consortium to integrate research, computing, and workforce development.
This investment is part of a broader push by New York State to strengthen its position as a global leader in emerging technologies. By expanding research capacity and cultivating top talent, the hub aims to accelerate breakthroughs that address complex societal challenges while driving economic growth across the region. With strong support from state leadership and continued funding for higher education, Stony Brook is poised to become a premier global center for quantum science and technology.
Read more about the investment, it's impact and Stony Brook's role as a leader in the field on Stony Brook News here.

[post_content] => Traverse Biosciences has announced that it has secured $500,000 in convertible debt financing to support operations and advance product development efforts. The seed financing was led by Excell Partners, with matching funds from a number of individual accredited angel investors. The Research Foundation for the State of New York (RF/SUNY) also participated in the financing, as part of an exclusive license and option agreement executed last year that gave Traverse Biosciences access to the relevant intellectual property for use in animal and human health.
Traverse Biosciences, which began when CEO Joseph Scaduto was serving as a BioEntrepreneur-in-Residence for the Center for Biotechnology, is working to commercialize its proprietary library of Stony Brook University invented chemically-modified curcumins for the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions and cancers affecting humans and animals.

The Center for Biotechnology recently co-hosted a startup series focused on providing guidance and insight into how innovators can take their solution from the benchtop to the Biomedical Advanced Research & Development Authority (BARDA).
Produced in collaboration with our fellow BARDA Division of Research, Innovation & Ventures (DRIVe) accelerators, each of the six sessions focused on key start up topics and were led by experts with providing an overview of key resources available to innovators to help fund and advance their solution from early through late stages of development, as well as provide guidance on how to navigate the funding opportunities within BARDA and BARDA DRIVe.
Look for our announcements of additional offerings from the BARDA DRIVe network soon, including the upcoming BARDA Industry Day on November 15-16, 2022.
