Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.
Application deadline: October 29, 2026, 5:00pm ET

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

[post_content] => Boris Shor, one of the Center for Biotechnology’s newest BioEntrepreneurs-in-Residence, has earned a place for his start-up, Manhattan Biosolutions, in Johnson and Johnson Innovations latest facility, JLABS @ NYC, as one of four winners of the company’s prestigious QuickFire Challenge. The winners of the QuickFire Challenge receive one year of residence in JLABS @ NYC, which provides to a bench, workstation and the global JLABS community
Manhattan BioSolutions’ lead platform is based on the safe, attenuated BCG bacteria targeting mutated cancer driver genes to induce innate and adaptive cancer-specific immune responses. Manhattan BioSolutions shares JLABS 30,000-square feet located at the New York Genome Center with 25 other companies.

[post_content] => The Center for Biotechnology is offering one-on-one SBIR/STTR proposal development counseling and iterative grant writing services to companies – application for next cohort is June 5th!
Companies that have completed our intensive 2-day workshop (or similar program) and/or have previously submitted an unsuccessful SBIR/STTR proposal in the past are eligible to apply. Services provided under this program are awarded through a competitive application process and include a weekly "best practices" proposal development webinar followed by iterative review of section drafts to guide stepwise development of the proposal from start to finish.
Companies selected for this follow-on counseling will be required to contribute $250 and will receive up to 10 hours of iterative proposal development services valued at $2000. These services will be subsidized by the Center for Biotechnology through the Downstate New York SBIR Assistance Program.

The CFB was proud to support our clients, Ergami Endoscopy and FASS, who were each announced as winners of $50,000 after pitching their business plans to a panel of judges assembled by FuzeHub at the recent New York State Innovation Summit.
FuzeHub is a not-for-profit organization that supports small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in New York State, hosts this annual as part of the ESD-supported FuzeHub Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund.
Ergami Endoscopy, based in New York City, is developing a low-cost robotic colonoscope insertion solution to improve procedure productivity; reduce patient pain and need for sedation; and reduce endoscopy-related injuries in endoscopists and nurses.
FASS is a unique syringe system that uses a rotating mechanism to switch between two needles in a single device, eliminating the need for manual switching of needles. Developed by an ER nurse after witnessing the dangers of needlestick injuries firsthand, FASS is designed to improve safety and efficiency in high-pressure environments like the ER and psychiatric units, where patients can be agitated.
