Advisory Council Statement of Purpose 

The Council shall provide support and actionable guidance to the Director and senior staff members of the Center for Biotechnology (CFB) to enhance its visibility, sharpen its focus, and leverage its successes and resources, with the singular goal of catalyzing the formation of a vibrant bioscience industry cluster in the Long Island region.

Membership

The Council will consist of 10-12 influential business and/or community leaders committed to seeing the LI region’s capacity for bioinnovation impact human health and the regional economy through new product development and company formation. They will care passionately about educating and developing student talent, and providing opportunities for students to apply their talents within the region. Council members may have expertise in one or more of the following areas; entrepreneurialism, biotech/medical device/or pharmaceutical development, finance and investment, regulatory affairs, government, business/IP law, marketing and/or fundraising, strategic planning, or not-for-profit management. Advisory Board members will serve a term of five years unless otherwise determined by the Board.

Advisory Council Member Responsibilities 

Advisory Council members will lead by example and assist the Center in the following ways:

  1. Advise – guide the CFB on issues of strategic importance to the fulfillment of its mission and vision. Serve on specific subcommittees as deemed necessary by the Council.
  2. Advocate – promote the core mission of the CFB to the business community, campus administration, local, state, and federal governments.
  3. Support – Advisory Council Members will lead the CFB’s fundraising activities through their own personal contributions, or by securing similar level contributions from other sources as agreed by the Board ($25,000 over five years). They will play a primary role in the attraction and cultivation of new Council members, and attend major CFB events.
  4. Lead – provide leadership in the development of an expansion and sustainability plan that will support key programs and initiatives in the areas of education and training, technology development, strategic partnerships, and company formation.

Acknowledgement

Advisory Council Members will be prominently acknowledged for their leadership and contributions to the CfB mission and vision, including in media announcements, websites, and print materials.

Meetings

The Advisory Council will meet three times per year (twice in person, once via conference call) for no more than two hours at a time, with subcommittee gatherings or conference calls more frequently if needed. Council members are expected to participate in at least one out of the two in-person meetings.
