New York State’s Governor Hochul has released a Request for Proposals for State-of-the-Art Cell and Gene Therapy Hub on Long Island to Transform the Field of Medical Research and Advance Life-Saving Cancer Treatments. Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

For a limited time, the Center for Biotechnology, as part of the NYS Designated Downstate SBIR/STTR Hub, is able to offer enhanced levels of support for SBIR/STTR proposal development and implementation. With support from Empire State Development, New York State companies are eligible to access services to help them learn about, develop, and execute SBIR/STTR proposals. Support during this limited time period includes:
- Access to short webinars and intensive workshops covering major federal agencies within the SBIR/STTR program
- One-on-one iterative proposal development consulting hours with SBIR experts
- Access to professional grant writing services
- Post award implementation consulting

Companies that apply will undergo a rigorous screening process before being selected to participate in the program which includes a targeted, hands-on coaching process with industry experts and a two-day intensive Bootcamp workshop in Boston in May. Participants gain unique exposure to Springboard's nationwide network of VCs, angels, corporate investors, seasoned entrepreneurs and strategic partners through a variety of virtual and in-person events, and presentation assessment opportunities.

Stony Brook University, College of Business in partnership with the Center for Biotechnology and Department of Biomedical Engineering has been awarded an Empire State Development Life Science Entrepreneur Development grant to address the growing need for entrepreneurial talent in New York’s life science ecosystem. These entrepreneur development grants will help close the talent gap that has previously limited life science commercialization in the state and will develop entrepreneurs with the mix of skills and expertise needed to successfully guide innovative life science startups along the path to commercial viability.
Five graduate schools of business working in collaboration with graduate programs in the life sciences have been awarded grants of up to $500,000 each to implement a new MBA concentration or certificate in life science entrepreneurship. Collaborations between the business school and life science graduate program are critical to equipping students with the skills needed to become leaders in New York’s growing life science ecosystem.
Dr. Clinton Rubin, Director of the Center for Biotechnology commented, “We hope to build from this NYS entrepreneurship education program to train the next generation of bioscience industry leaders. these students are perfectly placed to help lift NYS biotech to the next level, and translate next generation therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices from the academic to the business sector.”
