Avanti Biosciences, Inc. a preclinical-stage biopharmaceutical company lead by Center for Biotechnology BioEntrepreneur-in-Residence Dr. Gian Luca Araldi, has announced that the National Institute of Aging (NIA) has awarded the Company an SBIR fast-track grant of up to $1,930,000 to support the company’s small molecule treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) over the next 3 years.
The award will enable the preparation and testing of Avanti’s proprietary compounds derivatized from natural catechins, which inhibit DYRK1A, an enzyme that modulates tau phosphorylation. Working with NY Institute for Basic Research and the University of California San Diego (UCSD), the company hopes to attenuate and potentially reverse pathogenesis for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.
“This award marks a significant milestone for Avanti Biosciences and an important step for their research into a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease” stated Dr. Clinton Rubin, Director of the New York State Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University. “The Center for Biotechnology is thrilled to see another success for one of the emerging bioscience companies fueling our regional bioecosystem and we proudly support Dr. Araldi’s work as one of our BioEntrepreneurs-in-Residence.”

More than five million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive, irreversible, neurodegenerative disease that destroys memory and other cognitive abilities. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and as the aging population in the country grows, the incidence rate is expected to rise dramatically.
Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

[post_content] => Ohr Pharmaceutical, a pharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutics for large unmet medical needs, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) have announced the establishment of DepYmed Inc., a new joint venture to develop trodusquemine and related analogs.
The new joint venture will be a private entity, initially with equal ownership by Ohr and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The two partners will seek funding and contribute to the research and development of trodusquemine and also newly patented analogs. The goal is to take the program into the clinic and to demonstrate proof of concept.
Andreas Grill, former Executive Director of Forest Research Institute for Forest Laboratories, Inc and current Center for Biotechnology BioEntrepreneur-inResidence has been tapped to serve as Chief Executive Office for DepYmed.

The Biomedical Advanced Research & Development Authority’s Division of Research, Innovation, & Ventures (BARDA DRIVe), in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is proud to present the Awards Ceremony for the “Mask Innovation Challenge: Building Tomorrow’s Mask."
This event will celebrate the 10 Phase 1 finalist teams. They've all been working tirelessly to answer the PPE challenge of the pandemic era: Re-imagining and creating the mask of the future.
The Center for Biotechnology has announced the appointment of Dr. Dee Dao as Associate Director for Business Development and Investment. In her new role, Dr. Dao will serve as the primary contact on issues related to research, technology development and commercialization for the Center for Biotechnology. Additionally, Dr. Dao will foster new collaborative relationships in order to bolster sponsored research agreements and strategic alliances.
Prior to joining the CFB, Dr. Dao served as a Venture Associate for the NYU Innovation Venture Fund, where she focused on investment opportunities in life science and healthcare. Prior to NYU, Dr. Dao was at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research where she contributed to early oncology therapeutic development planning and oversaw intellectual property (IP) strategy to support the clinical development of the Institute’s therapeutics. Before that, Dr. Dao investigated bacterial virulence and immunity to identify new vaccines against Tuberculosis as a postdoctoral fellow in an HHMI laboratory at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Dao also serves as a mentor for entrepreneurs participating in the Entrepreneurship Lab, a NYCEDC initiative. Dr. Dao received a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics/Developmental Biology at Columbia University and a B.S. in Chemistry from University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Dao is also an alumnus of the Center for Biotechnology’s Fundamentals of the Bioscience Program in 2010.
“We are thrilled to have Dee join the Center for Biotechnology to lead our technology and business development efforts on behalf of innovators and emerging companies in New York” Diane Fabel, Director of Operations at the Center for Biotechnology said. She continued “Dee brings deep experience working with and funding innovation to her role at the Center which our clients and community will greatly benefit from.”
