Attention Stony Brook University Faculy and Staff: Applications for the second cycle of the President’s Fast Impact Fund (FIF) opened August 3, 2026. Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. [post_content] => A licensing agreement has been reached between the Research Foundation for SUNY and Biodex Medical Systems for Mobility Assist, a device that was invented and patented Dr. Anurag Purwar at Stony Brook University that will help people who have trouble standing up or sitting down become more independently mobile. The Center for Biotechnology was instrumental in bringing together Dr. Purwar with Biodex Medical System as a potential commercialization partners at the 2012 Long Island Innovation Boot Camp/Pre-Seed Workshop. The Center for Biotechnology also facilitated a Technology Accelerator Fund application for Dr. Anurag Purwar for the project entitled: ?A Mobility Assist Sit to Stand Device to Improve Quality of Life and Independence for Persons with Functional Limitations.? Biodex Medical System and the Center for Biotechnology provided matching funds to aid in the commercialization of this technology.
Mobility Assist, which will be manufactured at the Biodex plant in Shirley, New York and be available to patients in 2014, will be marketed to physical and occupational therapists as well as assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes to increase mobility among patients and residents.

The next HHS SBIR/STTR application deadline is less than two months away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 5 pm local time. (Note – the standard deadline falls on September 5, a federal holiday, so the revised deadline is September 6).
Make sure you are registered! The 5-step registration process may take 6 – 8 weeks, so it is important to start now. All registrations must be completed prior to the application being submitted, and the System for Awards Management (SAM) registration must be updated annually. Learn more about the five required registrations, here.
Don’t be shy - speak to an HHS SBIR/STTR Program Manager! It is critical for success that applicants speak to a program manager before submitting! You should send the program manager a non-confidential abstract or executive summary of your research topic, including a description of your technology, which may include your specific aims. After you connect via email, you and the program manager may decide to set up a call to discuss your application in more detail. For questions about who to contact, please email sbir@od.nih.gov.

[post_content] => On Monday, April 11, 2016 Stony Brook University launched its chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. With the launch, 30 university of faculty members will be inducted into that chapter's Hall of Fame, including Center for Biotechnology Director and Biomedical Engineering Chair, Dr. Clinton Rubin.
The NAI was founded in 2010 at the University of South Florida to recognize and encourage inventors who earn U.S. patents. The organization aims to enhance the visibility of university-based innovations and promote the societal benefits of technological and academic breakthroughs. Stony Brook joins more than 200 other NAI chapter members around the globe that will “foster research that leads to academic inventions and entrepreneurship from faculty and students,” while building “a culture of invention across all campus disciplines,” SBU said in a statement.
