Turning a good scientific idea into a successful biotech startup is a challenging journey.
What are the steps to building a successful biotech startup? How do startup founders find grants or investors to help them build their dreams?
This panel will highlight several successful programs that scientists can use when creating a successful biotech company. Learn what resources are available to turn your idea into a business and help you develop entrepreneurial skills.
The event will introduce funding and strategic programs available from IndieBio, the Center for Biotechnology, and SVB Startup Banking Life Sciences. Featuring Phuong Nguyen, Commercialization Fellow at the Center for Biotechnology; Stephen Chambers, Managing Director and Partner of IndieBio in New York and Anton Xavier, Director for Startup Life Science Banking in NY and the Northeast at SVB Financial Group.
Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

The Life Sciences Innovation and Entrepreneurship (LiSIE) program at Stony Brook is looking to give students a jump-start in the bioscience industry. The program is a joint effort between the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Business and the Center for Biotechnology. “From the lab to leadership”, the program aims to teach key business principles to life sciences students so they’re equipped to work in the business side of science.

BARDA DRIVe is seeking information on developments in anticoagulation drugs, assays, and management in the specific context of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. The intent is to identify areas of innovation that can solve the challenges posed by anticoagulation in ECMO or improve on the ways this issue is currently being addressed. BARDA will not execute any awards based on this notice. This RFI solely aims to gather knowledge on present and future capabilities and other pertinent marketplace data to strengthen BARDA’s understanding of the current developmental landscape of this field.
