Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

[post_content] => Biotechnology Strategist Brian McCarthy and Pharma Executive Gian Luca Araldi
selected to launch new bioscience companies
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – November 23, 2015 – The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University announced today the appointment of Brian McCarthy, PhD and Gian Luca Araldi, PhD, as BioEntrepreneurs-In-Residence (B-EIR) for the Long Island Bioscience Hub. The Long Island Bioscience Hub is a National Institutes of Health-designated Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub, and represents a partnership between Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, to commercialize technology emerging from their institutions.
Drs. McCarthy and Araldi have broad bioscience industry experience and comprehensive knowledge of commercializing academic technologies. In their roles as BEIR they will identify technologies that have the potential to support company formation in the region. Each brings unique skills and perspectives to technology assessment and bioscience-startups.
Dr. McCarthy is a senior biotechnology strategist with operational, start-up, development, and financial expertise. He currently serves as a business advisor to Gismo Therapeutics Inc. and VP of Business and Clinical Development at Viatar CTC Solutions Inc. Prior to his Wall Street and entrepreneurial career, Dr. McCarthy was a faculty member at Cornell University Medical College and the National Naval Medical Center. Dr. McCarthy received his PhD in Neurobiology from Stony Brook University.
Dr. Araldi is a pharmaceutical and biotechnology executive with more than 25 years of experience ranging from basic research through clinical development at major pharmaceutical companies including Glaxo, Forest Laboratories and Merck-Serono. Dr. Araldi has been involved in the development of key medicines such as Teflaro®, Dutogliptin®, Gavestinel®, Sanfetrinem® and Sanfetrinem® Cilexetil and is the inventor of 113 granted patents. Dr. Araldi received doctorate degrees in Organic Chemistry and Pharmacy from the University of Parma (Italy) and recently received his M.B.A. in Finance from Long Island University Post.
“The Long Island Bioscience Hub is excited to announce the appointments of Drs. McCarthy and Araldi as BioEntrepreneurs-in-Residence” Diane Fabel, Director of Operations for the Center for Biotechnology stated. “They join a talented roster of five existing BioEntrepreneurs in Residence at the Center for Biotechnology who are well on their way to commercializing technologies and building their companies.”
As B-EIRs Drs. McCarthy and Araldi are tasked with identifying technology or technologies from within the partner institutions that will create the foundation for licensing and company formation. They will have the support of the LIBH business and technology development staff, as well as the support of external industry advisors to develop successful commercialization strategies. The LIBH can also provide access to a competitive pool of technology development funding to help move their technologies down a commercial pathway. Ultimately, the goal is to help the company position itself prepare for SBIR/STTR grant opportunities, and Angel and VC investment.

The Long Island BioMentor Initiative (LIBMI), created and managed by the Center for Biotechnology, is excited to welcome two new mentors, Dr. Annie Rohan, PhD, RN, FAANP, FAAN and Mike Horan, MBA.
Dr. Annie Rohan is currently Dean of the Henry P. Becton School Nursing and Allied Health at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Rohan is a dual-certified Nurse Practitioner whose academic achievements rest on the foundation of a 25-year clinical career caring for critically and chronically ill infants and children, and highest-risk families. To support diversification of the healthcare workforce, she has procured over $10-million in federal funding to support the education of underrepresented and disadvantaged students into the allied health and nursing professions. Dr. Rohan is currently Associate Editor for MCN: The American Journal of Maternal-Child Nursing, and has been honored with Fellowship in both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and American Academy of Nursing (FAAN).
Mike Horan, MBA is a Product Development, Engineering, and Operations Executive. He is an accomplished engineering and technology business leader with over 30 years of experience in product development. At Zebra Technologies, he currently serves as the Sr. Director of Global Quality overseeing quality for their product and solutions portfolio, supply chain and QMS. Mike has experience in Strategic & Portfolio Planning, Engineering Leadership, Program Management, Supply Chain, Manufacturing and Operations —all in a global environment. He is a highly motivational leader with experience in building high-performing teams.
The LIBM brings highly qualified volunteer mentors together with motivated, early-stage bioentrepreneurs to provide actionable guidance and support as they advance their business strategy. The initiative was developed in an alliance with MIT’s successful Venture Mentor Service and employs a team mentoring approach which is guided by a statement of principles to ensure confidentiality and a conflict free environment.

[post_content] => On Monday, April 11, 2016 Stony Brook University launched its chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. With the launch, 30 university of faculty members will be inducted into that chapter's Hall of Fame, including Center for Biotechnology Director and Biomedical Engineering Chair, Dr. Clinton Rubin.
The NAI was founded in 2010 at the University of South Florida to recognize and encourage inventors who earn U.S. patents. The organization aims to enhance the visibility of university-based innovations and promote the societal benefits of technological and academic breakthroughs. Stony Brook joins more than 200 other NAI chapter members around the globe that will “foster research that leads to academic inventions and entrepreneurship from faculty and students,” while building “a culture of invention across all campus disciplines,” SBU said in a statement.
