Healthcare Entrepreneurship Community Challenge: Creating Wellness

The Healthcare Entrepreneurship Community Challenge solicits proposals for new products or services to address a community healthcare problem facing underserved areas in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley Region.
The Challenge focuses on inspiring entrepreneurs to develop market-based solutions to health problems in underserved communities in downstate New York. A Steering Committee formed of public health experts selects an annual Challenge topic. Entrepreneurs who participate in the Challenge will receive mentorship, participate in a bootcamp and will showcase their innovations and pitch at an annual Regional Symposium.
– Applications are due by 11:55PM EST on March 15, 2019 at www.nyhealthchallenge.com
– The Healthcare Challenge is part of the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Regional Innovation Strategies i6 Challenge and is hosted by Hofstra University’s Center for Entrepreneurship.
– The signature prize money sponsor is Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer.
– The innovation must address the 2019 topic “Creating Wellness” and solve a healthcare problem facing one or more underserved communities in NYC, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley.
– Entrepreneurs will participate in a Bootcamp, receive mentorship from healthcare experts, and have an opportunity to present at a Regional Symposium and Pitch Competition.
– This year’s competition includes a $5,000 “Community Impact Award” for diverse entrepreneurs who are solving suburban healthcare issues sponsored by the Hofstra University National Center for Suburban Studies.
– Prize money sponsors include Digital Remedy, Ernst & Young, Nixon Peabody, and the NuHealth Foundation.
– In-kind sponsors include Intelligent Product Solutions and the Hofstra ideaHUb.
Attention Stony Brook University Faculy and Staff: Applications for the second cycle of the President’s Fast Impact Fund (FIF) opened August 3, 2026. Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. The Center for Biotechnology has announced the appointment of Dr. Dee Dao as Associate Director for Business Development and Investment. In her new role, Dr. Dao will serve as the primary contact on issues related to research, technology development and commercialization for the Center for Biotechnology. Additionally, Dr. Dao will foster new collaborative relationships in order to bolster sponsored research agreements and strategic alliances.
Prior to joining the CFB, Dr. Dao served as a Venture Associate for the NYU Innovation Venture Fund, where she focused on investment opportunities in life science and healthcare. Prior to NYU, Dr. Dao was at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research where she contributed to early oncology therapeutic development planning and oversaw intellectual property (IP) strategy to support the clinical development of the Institute’s therapeutics. Before that, Dr. Dao investigated bacterial virulence and immunity to identify new vaccines against Tuberculosis as a postdoctoral fellow in an HHMI laboratory at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Dao also serves as a mentor for entrepreneurs participating in the Entrepreneurship Lab, a NYCEDC initiative. Dr. Dao received a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics/Developmental Biology at Columbia University and a B.S. in Chemistry from University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Dao is also an alumnus of the Center for Biotechnology’s Fundamentals of the Bioscience Program in 2010.

[post_content] => The Center for Biotechnology is seeking one or more qualified and motivated high school students interested in learning about and supporting technology development and commercialization of new biomedical innovations on behalf of the Long Island Bioscience Hub (LIBH). The LIBH is a National Institutes of Health-designated Research, Evaluation, and Commercialization Hub (REACH), one of only three such centers in the country. The LIBH supports the development and commercialization activities of its partner institutions including Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Candidates for the Fellowship will have completed their sophomore year in high school, have a GPA of no less than a 3.0, and have an interest in exploring careers in a biomedical field. The Fellowship will run from August 1 - August 31. Some flexibility possible. Interested candidates should send a one-page statement of interest detailing their academic accomplishments and describing what they would like to gain from the Fellowship experience, along with a transcript to: Kristina Duryea kristina.duryea@stonybrook.edu.

Deadline for application materials is July 15, 2016.
Additional admissions procedures (including interviews, by telephone or in person) may be required.
