Attention Stony Brook University Faculy and Staff: Applications for the second cycle of the President’s Fast Impact Fund (FIF) opened August 3, 2026. Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. Please visit the Fast Impact Fund website for additional information and to submit an application.

For a limited time, the Center for Biotechnology, as part of the NYS Designated Downstate SBIR/STTR Hub, is able to offer enhanced levels of support for SBIR/STTR proposal development and implementation. With support from Empire State Development, New York State companies are eligible to access services to help them learn about, develop, and execute SBIR/STTR proposals. Support during this limited time period includes:
- Access to short webinars and intensive workshops covering major federal agencies within the SBIR/STTR program
- One-on-one iterative proposal development consulting hours with SBIR experts
- Access to professional grant writing services
- Post award implementation consulting

[post_content] => Traverse Biosciences, lead by CFB BioEntrepreneur-in-Residence (B-EIR) Joseph Scaduto, has announced that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has accepted the company into its competitive Commercialization Accelerator Program (CAP).
Hosted in partnership with the Larta Institute, NIH CAP is a 9-month program that is well-regarded for its combination of deep domain expertise and access to industry connections, which have resulted in measurable gains and accomplishments by participating companies. It is open only to NIH SBIR/STTR Phase II awardees, with only 80 slots available each year. The program enables participants to establish market and customer relevance, build commercial relationships, and focus on revenue opportunities available to them.
Last year, Traverse Biosciences announced that it had received a $1.3M Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award in partnership with the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University. Read the full Traverse Biosciences announcement here.

[post_content] => Awards support innovative research collaborations between academic faculty and regional bioscience companies.
The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University has announced the recipients of the 2019-2020 Applied Research & Development (ARaD) awards. The ARaD Program is designed to help bridge the gap between the early-stage technology discovery and development capabilities of the academic community, and the later-stage commercial development interests of the bioscience industry.
The program currently provides matching funds on a competitive basis to support collaborations between Stony Brook University faculty and New York State corporate partners in all areas of medical biotechnology. The primary interest is in supporting development of technologies that will help companies hit commercially relevant milestones, and that have the potential to positively impact the New York State economy.
Projects supported this year include the further development of an Intensive Care Unit temporary pacemaker, a novel material platform to improve extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMOs) in heart-lung machines, further development of skin brightening agents, and a novel therapeutic to treat Lung Cancer.
“Through our participation in the Applied Research and Development Program at the Center for Biotechnology, we have been able to access the expertise of Dr. Wei Lin in the Department of Biomedical Engineering to collaborate on strategic research projects” stated Linda Towler, CEO of Avery Biomedical Devices, a global leader in high reliability diaphragm pacemakers. “This research and development collaboration has allowed us to considerably accelerate our product development and we expect it to generate significant new revenue for the company downstream.”
“The Center for Biotechnology is thrilled to be able to continue to collaborate with New York State companies to help them develop commercially promising technologies that will lead to strategic partnerships, investment, corporate revenues, and job creation” said Diane Fabel, Director of Operations for the Center for Biotechnology. “The projects supported by this year’s Applied Research and Development awards exemplify the innovative science happening all around us both in our academic institutions and bioscience companies. The Center for Biotechnology is excited to be an engine promoting interactions between the two to help fuel the overall bioscience ecosystem in the region.”
The ARaD Program is part of a suite of programs and services provided by the Center for Biotechnology (CFB) focused on accelerating the development of biomedical technologies in order to have a positive impact on human health and society.
