Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

[post_content] => The newly re-authorized Commercialization Readiness Pilot (CRP) program is now accepting applications from previously or currently HHS-funded SBIR and STTR Phase II and Phase IIB awardees.
NHLBI open and accepting applications from NHLBI grantees for the September 5th NIH SBIR/STTR receipt date; HHS/NIH general applications will be accepted from August 5, 2019 until April 6, 2022 via standard due dates.
CPR can provide over $3 million in additional funding to facilitate the commercialization transition for projects, and support work that is not typically supported through SBIR/STTR Phase II or Phase IIB awards, including:
- Preparation of documents for a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) submission
- Development of an intellectual property strategy
- Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling studies
- Clinical studies
- Manufacturing costs
- Regulatory assistance
- Subcontracted work to other institutions, including contract research organizations (CRO)
- A combination of services.
Although a significant amount of the work in a CRP award may be subcontracted to other institutions, the Small Business Concern (SBC) is expected to maintain oversight and management of the R&D throughout the award. Please note, this re-authorization includes (3) separate Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) with varying participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The Center for Biotechnology recently co-hosted a startup series focused on providing guidance and insight into how innovators can take their solution from the benchtop to the Biomedical Advanced Research & Development Authority (BARDA).
Produced in collaboration with our fellow BARDA Division of Research, Innovation & Ventures (DRIVe) accelerators, each of the six sessions focused on key start up topics and were led by experts with providing an overview of key resources available to innovators to help fund and advance their solution from early through late stages of development, as well as provide guidance on how to navigate the funding opportunities within BARDA and BARDA DRIVe.
Look for our announcements of additional offerings from the BARDA DRIVe network soon, including the upcoming BARDA Industry Day on November 15-16, 2022.

The next HHS SBIR/STTR application deadline is less than two months away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 5 pm local time. (Note – the standard deadline falls on September 5, a federal holiday, so the revised deadline is September 6).
Make sure you are registered! The 5-step registration process may take 6 – 8 weeks, so it is important to start now. All registrations must be completed prior to the application being submitted, and the System for Awards Management (SAM) registration must be updated annually. Learn more about the five required registrations, here.
Don’t be shy - speak to an HHS SBIR/STTR Program Manager! It is critical for success that applicants speak to a program manager before submitting! You should send the program manager a non-confidential abstract or executive summary of your research topic, including a description of your technology, which may include your specific aims. After you connect via email, you and the program manager may decide to set up a call to discuss your application in more detail. For questions about who to contact, please email sbir@od.nih.gov.
ASSIST vs. Downloadable Forms - You may submit your application using ASSIST or the Downloadable Forms method, starting on March 5, 2016. Please select the "Apply Online Using ASSIST" button, or the "Apply Using Downloadable Forms" button within the SBIR/STTR solicitation. View the ASSIST webinar materials here.

Remember – The standard due dates occur on September 5, January 5, and April 5. The standard due dates apply to all SBIR/STTR solicitations that follow the Standard Due Dates, including the SBIR/STTR Omnibus solicitations and the Commercialization Readiness Pilot Program solicitations. CFB Director of Operations, Diane Fabel, has been inducted into the Stony Brook University Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI-SBU) as an honorary member. At the chapter’s Annual Meeting on May 1, 2017, 16 new members and 2 honorary members were inducted into the Academy. Ms. Fabel and her fellow inductees join 30 stony brook faculty members, including CFB Director Clinton Rubin, who were inducted as inaugural members to the SBU-NAI in 2016.
