Next HHS SBIR/STTR Application Deadline 9/6 – Get Started Today

The next HHS SBIR/STTR application deadline is less than two months away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 5 pm local time. (Note – the standard deadline falls on September 5, a federal holiday, so the revised deadline is September 6).
Make sure you are registered! The 5-step registration process may take 6 – 8 weeks, so it is important to start now. All registrations must be completed prior to the application being submitted, and the System for Awards Management (SAM) registration must be updated annually. Learn more about the five required registrations, here.
Don’t be shy – speak to an HHS SBIR/STTR Program Manager! It is critical for success that applicants speak to a program manager before submitting! You should send the program manager a non-confidential abstract or executive summary of your research topic, including a description of your technology, which may include your specific aims. After you connect via email, you and the program manager may decide to set up a call to discuss your application in more detail. For questions about who to contact, please email sbir@od.nih.gov.

Attention Stony Brook University Faculy and Staff: Applications for the second cycle of the President’s Fast Impact Fund (FIF) opened August 3, 2026. Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. Please visit the Fast Impact Fund website for additional information and to submit an application.
SBU Startup, Lahara Bio, presented in the start-up stadium event at the 2023 BIO International Convention in June.
Christopher Ashdown, a MD/PhD student at Stony Brook University, and Center for Biotechnology Program alumnus presented on behalf of Lahara after securing a spot in the coveted forum by winning multiple pitch competitions from NIH SEED office.
According to Ashdown, “Bio 2023 was an amazing experience, and I was thrilled to be able to share the exciting work that we're doing at Lahara Bio with the greater bioscience community. The CfB was incredibly helpful in preparing the company for this conference and has done an excellent job of helping me develop on a personal/professional level".
In addition to the main stage presentation, Ashdown also presented Lahara Bio at the NIH booth. Lahara Bio was sponsored to attend BIO by the NIH after Ashdown won the national investor pitch competition at the NIH Proof of Concept Network annual meeting this past spring.

[post_content] => Entrepreneur Derek Brand Selected to Facilitate New Bioscience Ventures
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – December 14, 2015 – The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University announced today the appointment of Derek Brand as BioEntrepreneur-In-Residence (B-EIR) for the Long Island Bioscience Hub. The Long Island Bioscience Hub is a National Institutes of Health-designated Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub, and represents a partnership between Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, to commercialize technology emerging from their institutions.
Mr. Brand most recently served as Vice President of Business Development at Enumeral Biomedical Corp., which licensed a single cell immunology platform out of MIT and is now a publicly traded biotechnology company with a pipeline of novel immunotherapies in oncology. In addition to Enumeral, Mr. Brand has held both business and scientific roles at multiple early-stage, venture-backed biomedical startup companies; he has also held commercial leadership roles at GE and the New York Academy of Sciences and presently serves on the advisory board of Allovate LLC, a novel allergy immunotherapy company in NYC. He received his MBA from Babson College and his B.A. in biology from Hamilton College.

Mr. Brand joins an impressive roster of seven B-EIRs that was expanded in November to include Drs. Brian McCarthy and Gian Luca Araldi. Dr. McCarthy has an extensive background as an investment analyst and as the President and CEO of the startup Influmedix while Dr. Araldi has had a distinguished career in drug discovery within the pharmaceutical industry and as the Founder and Principal of US Pharma Services.
LIBH B-EIRs are tasked with identifying technology or technologies from within the partner institutions that will create the foundation for licensing and company formation. B-EIRs will have the support of the LIBH business and technology development staff, along with external industry advisors to develop successful commercialization strategies, and position the company for SBIR/STTR grant opportunities, and Angel and VC investment. The LIBH can also provide opportunities to access development funding to help advance technologies towards commercialization. Ultimately, the goal is to foster the creation and growth of new ventures that leverage the exceptional scientific and technological advances taking place at LIBH institutions.

Two incubator hubs, CIMIT’s CINTA and NeuroTech Harbor, through the NIH Blueprint MedTech program, are currently seeking proposals from academic and industry applicants who have emerging technologies that aim to improve the diagnosis and/or treatment of nervous system disorders.
A major emphasis of this program is to create opportunities for diverse innovators, including those who have been traditionally underrepresented in the neurotech space.
