Long Island Bioscience Hub Announces Next Funded Projects

Accelerating the development of biomedical technologies

The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University, on behalf of the Long Island Bioscience Hub (LIBH), has announced the recipients of the second round of funded projects under the Hub’s technology development and commercialization initiative. Funding for ten projects totaling $600,000 was awarded to applicants from the Hub’s partner institutions. Partner institutions include Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Feinstein Institute at Northwell Health Systems.

The technology development awards made available by the LIBH are specifically aimed at growing a pipeline of commercially promising biomedical technologies that can be out-licensed for further development or serve as the foundation for new company formations in the region. There are two tiers of funding, each with the goal of accelerating technology development to reach a critical development inflection point. Feasibility awards ($50,000) are designed to rapidly test the feasibility of new ideas in a “fail-fast-or-proceed” format, or to add value to existing intellectual property leading to new market applications. Proof-of-Concept Awards ($100,000) provide targeted, milestone driven support for further development, testing, and analysis of existing intellectual property.

A wide range of disciplines are represented in the project awards this cycle including biomedical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, psychiatry, molecular genetics and microbiology, and pathology and dermatology.  Eight Feasibility awards and two Proof of Concepts awards have been funded this cycle. The recipients of this round of awards are:

​“The announcement of this second cycle of awards from the Long Island Bioscience Hub under the NIH-REACH program is exemplary of the increasing commercially relevant research taking place in the region” said Clinton T. Rubin, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor, Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Director, Center for Biotechnology. “Coupled with the recent expansion of the Hub to include the Feinstein Institute and the announcement of our third “request for proposals,” the LIBH is steadily working toward its goal of accelerating the translation of these technologies from the bench to the bed side.”

The main goal of the LIBH is to foster the development of therapeutics, preventatives, diagnostics, devices and research tools emerging from LIBH partner institutions that address diseases within the NIH’s mission.

Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled plans for New York BioGenesis Park, a groundbreaking $430 million Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) Innovation Hub in Nassau County, Long Island. To be developed by The Albanese Organization, Inc., this state-of-the-art facility would catalyze CGT research, development, clinical manufacturing, and commercialization across New York State. With a historic $150 million state investment—the largest nationwide for a cell and gene therapy hub—NYBGP would accelerate the delivery of new therapies from lab to patient in New York's diverse communities. This transformative hub aims to establish New York as the leading global destination for CGT innovation, driving economic growth, attracting top talent, and revolutionizing patient care statewide and beyond.

The Center for Biotechnology is thrilled to be counted as a partner in this effort, and is looking forward to working with our colleagues in the initiative to help catalyze and accelerate life-changing therapies.

New York BioGenesis Park is envisioned as a cutting-edge, full-service campus dedicated to advancing cell and gene therapies and accelerating their commercialization. At full build-out, the 700,000-square-foot park would create an end-to-end Cell and Gene Therapy innovation and supply center, featuring interconnected areas for public engagement, research, manufacturing, and collaboration.

A cornerstone of New York BioGenesis Park is its incubator, supported by a $50 million investment from ESD's Long Island Investment Fund. This facility will empower early-stage therapeutic developers by offering state-of-the-art wet lab space, shared equipment, office space, and other essential resources. This nurturing environment will provide Cell and Gene Therapy companies with access to specialized equipment, mentoring, and stage-appropriate financial guidance. As a critical component of New York BioGenesis Park, the incubator is poised to catalyze the growth of promising Cell and Gene Therapy companies by providing them with resources and support, unlocking their potential for innovation and success.

The Long Island BioMentor Initiative (LIBMI), created and managed by the Center for Biotechnology, is excited to welcome two new mentors, Dr. Annie Rohan, PhD, RN, FAANP, FAAN and Mike Horan, MBA.

Dr. Annie Rohan is currently Dean of the Henry P. Becton School Nursing and Allied Health at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Rohan is a dual-certified Nurse Practitioner whose academic achievements rest on the foundation of a 25-year clinical career caring for critically and chronically ill infants and children, and highest-risk families. To support diversification of the healthcare workforce, she has procured over $10-million in federal funding to support the education of underrepresented and disadvantaged students into the allied health and nursing professions. Dr. Rohan is currently Associate Editor for MCN: The American Journal of Maternal-Child Nursing, and has been honored with Fellowship in both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and American Academy of Nursing (FAAN).

Mike Horan, MBA is a Product Development, Engineering, and Operations Executive. He is an accomplished engineering and technology business leader with over 30 years of experience in product development. At Zebra Technologies, he currently serves as the Sr. Director of Global Quality overseeing quality for their product and solutions portfolio, supply chain and QMS. Mike has experience in Strategic & Portfolio Planning, Engineering Leadership, Program Management, Supply Chain, Manufacturing and Operations —all in a global environment. He is a highly motivational leader with experience in building high-performing teams.

The LIBM brings highly qualified volunteer mentors together with motivated, early-stage bioentrepreneurs to provide actionable guidance and support as they advance their business strategy. The initiative was developed in an alliance with MIT’s successful Venture Mentor Service and employs a team mentoring approach which is guided by a statement of principles to ensure confidentiality and a conflict free environment.

BARDA DRIVe is seeking information on technologies that are relevant to AI for automated biomedical image acquisition and AI for automated biomedical image interpretation, with a focus on reducing the burden on clinical, technician, and care staff in any setting. This request encompass all stages of development from early research/academic labs through start up and late commercialization: They are more interested in technical rather than any particular stage of development, thus the focus is not just on the commercial sector but also on the work being conducted at academic/research/medical/FFRDC organizations. This can be an AI solution applied to existing imaging infrastructure, or new imaging devices. This AI and imaging combination should provide new value propositions, form factors, or use cases that are only possible with integration of AI.

Specific areas and use cases of interest include but are not limited to:
- Automated biomedical image interpretation, primarily in ultrasound, computer tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
- Approaches to automated interpretation of optical and x-ray images are of interest, but of secondary priority.
- AI-based diagnostic image acquisition and image interpretation in emergency medical services (EMSs) and in surgical settings to accurately assess the severity of a patient’s medical condition, e.g. the location of an internal hemorrhage or the location of a broken bone, torn ligament or other injury.
- AI-based automated image reconstruction.
- AI-based automated analysis of cancer screening images (e.g. mammograms)
- AI-assisted image guidance for placement of medical devices, e.g. catheterization
- AI-assisted fluoroscopy

The Center for Biotechnology recently co-hosted a startup series focused on providing guidance and insight into how innovators can take their solution from the benchtop to the Biomedical Advanced Research & Development Authority (BARDA).

Produced in collaboration with our fellow BARDA Division of Research, Innovation & Ventures (DRIVe) accelerators, each of the six sessions focused on key start up topics and were led by experts with providing an overview of key resources available to innovators to help fund and advance their solution from early through late stages of development, as well as provide guidance on how to navigate the funding opportunities within BARDA and BARDA DRIVe.
