A new article from CFB Director Dr. Clinton Rubin and colleagues appears in the latest issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research from The American Society for Bone and MIneral Research (ASMBR). The article highlights the ability of low-intensity vibration (LIV) to combat skeletal decline in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) as evaluated in a randomized controlled trial. “Low-Intensity Vibration Protects the Weight-Bearing Skeleton and Suppresses Fracture Incidence in Boys With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial”

The Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS) is awarding pilot funding of up to $25K per investigator with projects of novel approaches to translational science. This is open to faculty and postdoctoral fellows from the LINCATS network. Up to 8 awards will be granted per year – 4 of which will be provided to principal investigators from collaborating institutions, and 4 for SBU investigators.

Eligibility: All postdoctoral fellows and faculty affiliated with the LINCATS network (Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, Northport VA Medical Center, Stony Brook University and all Stony Brook Medicine-affiliated healthcare locations) are eligible to apply. We will prioritize early career, under-represented groups, women, health disparities-focused clinical and translational science, and collaborative projects across institutions. Preference will be given to non-funded and new lines of research for the applying investigator.

Data Capture and OnCore subject tracking
Pilot Tracking, to ensure the project meets specified milestones, including timely reporting
Resource Access to all LINCATS services

The first virtual Health Security Innovation Showcase is being held on October 18 from 12 pm – 5 pm EDT to learn about high impact life science startups being supported by BARDA partners, including, CARB-X, the BARDA Accelerator Network, and the BARDA-J&J Blue Knight program. These companies are developing platform technologies in a variety of technology areas, including diagnostic tools, therapeutics/vaccines, advanced manufacturing, and clinical trial support.

Highlights of the event:

– A Keynote address by Dr. Gary Disbrow, Director of BARDA
– 5-minute pitches by each company, followed by 3 minutes of Q&A
– Overviews of BARDA programs supporting innovation in the health security space
– Opportunities for you to set up one-on-one partnering meetings with the presenting companies
