Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

[post_content] => A licensing agreement has been reached between the Research Foundation for SUNY and Biodex Medical Systems for Mobility Assist, a device that was invented and patented Dr. Anurag Purwar at Stony Brook University that will help people who have trouble standing up or sitting down become more independently mobile. The Center for Biotechnology was instrumental in bringing together Dr. Purwar with Biodex Medical System as a potential commercialization partners at the 2012 Long Island Innovation Boot Camp/Pre-Seed Workshop. The Center for Biotechnology also facilitated a Technology Accelerator Fund application for Dr. Anurag Purwar for the project entitled: ?A Mobility Assist Sit to Stand Device to Improve Quality of Life and Independence for Persons with Functional Limitations.? Biodex Medical System and the Center for Biotechnology provided matching funds to aid in the commercialization of this technology.
Mobility Assist, which will be manufactured at the Biodex plant in Shirley, New York and be available to patients in 2014, will be marketed to physical and occupational therapists as well as assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes to increase mobility among patients and residents.

[post_content] => The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) is leading an interagency group to develop a wearable device to detect, and possibly treat, an opioid overdose. This group, Technology Innovation to Combat Opioids (TICO) is holding a Deep Dive on Feb 12-13, 2019 to review possible technologies being developed in this area. Specifically, they are looking for wearables or software as a medical device that are no larger than the palm of your hand and measure a physiological response indicative of an opioid overdose. Examples of possible markers that could be incorporated into the device include, but are not limited to, respiratory rate, blood carbon dioxide or oxygen content, brain activity and opioid levels. The device should have the ability to alert potential caretakers nearby that the wearer is in distress and, potentially, have the capability to dispense a treatment for the overdose event. The technologies should be at a maturity level capable of undergoing pivotal clinical trials in 2020.
TICO invites anyone with an innovative idea in this space to submit a 1-2 page summary of their device that addresses the following items:
- Provide a high-level device description including how the device detects possible opioid overdose.
- How does the device notify potential caretakers? Does it notify people nearby? If so, how?
- Description of the user population and use environment?
- What are the performance limitations for the device?
- How does the device treat an opioid overdose if that is a feature?
- Do you own the intellectual property for this technology?
TICO will review each submission and invite selected participants to present their technology at the Deep Dive on Feb 12-13, 2019. Travel funding is not available, however, this meeting will serve as market research for the solicitation that will be issued by BARDA to fund the clinical study.
