Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

[post_content] => The Healthcare Entrepreneurship Community Challenge solicits proposals for new products or services to address a community healthcare problem facing underserved areas in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley Region.
The Challenge focuses on inspiring entrepreneurs to develop market-based solutions to health problems in underserved communities in downstate New York. A Steering Committee formed of public health experts selects an annual Challenge topic. Entrepreneurs who participate in the Challenge will receive mentorship, participate in a bootcamp and will showcase their innovations and pitch at an annual Regional Symposium.
Program notes:
- Applications are due by 11:55PM EST on March 15, 2019 at www.nyhealthchallenge.com
- The Healthcare Challenge is part of the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Regional Innovation Strategies i6 Challenge and is hosted by Hofstra University’s Center for Entrepreneurship.
- The signature prize money sponsor is Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer.
- The innovation must address the 2019 topic “Creating Wellness” and solve a healthcare problem facing one or more underserved communities in NYC, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley.
- Entrepreneurs will participate in a Bootcamp, receive mentorship from healthcare experts, and have an opportunity to present at a Regional Symposium and Pitch Competition.
- This year’s competition includes a $5,000 “Community Impact Award” for diverse entrepreneurs who are solving suburban healthcare issues sponsored by the Hofstra University National Center for Suburban Studies.
- Prize money sponsors include Digital Remedy, Ernst & Young, Nixon Peabody, and the NuHealth Foundation.
- In-kind sponsors include Intelligent Product Solutions and the Hofstra ideaHUb.

[post_content] => A licensing agreement has been reached between the Research Foundation for SUNY and Biodex Medical Systems for Mobility Assist, a device that was invented and patented Dr. Anurag Purwar at Stony Brook University that will help people who have trouble standing up or sitting down become more independently mobile. The Center for Biotechnology was instrumental in bringing together Dr. Purwar with Biodex Medical System as a potential commercialization partners at the 2012 Long Island Innovation Boot Camp/Pre-Seed Workshop. The Center for Biotechnology also facilitated a Technology Accelerator Fund application for Dr. Anurag Purwar for the project entitled: ?A Mobility Assist Sit to Stand Device to Improve Quality of Life and Independence for Persons with Functional Limitations.? Biodex Medical System and the Center for Biotechnology provided matching funds to aid in the commercialization of this technology.
Mobility Assist, which will be manufactured at the Biodex plant in Shirley, New York and be available to patients in 2014, will be marketed to physical and occupational therapists as well as assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes to increase mobility among patients and residents.

[post_content] => Celmatix has announced a collaboration with 23andMe, the leading personal genetics company, with the goal of improving infertility outcomes. This collaboration will accelerate the launch of Celmatix’s tests, which will aim to provide physicians with a comprehensive genetic lens on infertility. This will also enable the development of early screening tests which will help OBGYNs identify women who are at risk for premature decline of their ovarian function, which has both infertility and broader health implications.
