BARDA RFI/CALL for Technologies

BARDA DRIVe is seeking information on technologies that are relevant to AI for automated biomedical image acquisition and AI for automated biomedical image interpretation, with a focus on reducing the burden on clinical, technician, and care staff in any setting. If you can provide insight on any of the items listed below, please contact Phuong Nguyen (phuong.t.nguyen@stonybrook.edu) by June 8, 2021.

This request encompass all stages of development from early research/academic labs through start up and late commercialization: They are more interested in technical rather than any particular stage of development, thus the focus is not just on the commercial sector but also on the work being conducted at academic/research/medical/FFRDC organizations. This can be an AI solution applied to existing imaging infrastructure, or new imaging devices. This AI and imaging combination should provide new value propositions, form factors, or use cases that are only possible with integration of AI.

Specific areas and use cases of interest include but are not limited to:
– Automated biomedical image interpretation, primarily in ultrasound, computer tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
– Approaches to automated interpretation of optical and x-ray images are of interest, but of secondary priority.
– AI-based diagnostic image acquisition and image interpretation in emergency medical services (EMSs) and in surgical settings to accurately assess the severity of a patient’s medical condition, e.g. the location of an internal hemorrhage or the location of a broken bone, torn ligament or other injury.
– AI-based automated image reconstruction.
– AI-based automated analysis of cancer screening images (e.g. mammograms)
– AI-assisted image guidance for placement of medical devices, e.g. catheterization
– AI-assisted fluoroscopy

Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.



BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

                    [post_content] => The Center for Biotechnology (CFB) at Stony Brook University is a New York State Center for Advanced Technology and the lead institution of the Long Island Bioscience Hub. The CFB provides the cross-institutional infrastructure for technology development, technology transfer, strategic industry partnerships, new company formation, attraction of investment capital, and other commercialization activities.

The CFB seeks ongoing technology and business development consulting services for its faculty and small business clients. The CFB works primarily with faculty and emerging small businesses to help them develop their technology and business strategy to prepare them for strategic partnerships and/or investment.

Consulting services anticipated, but not limited to:

 	Conduct thorough due diligence on select technologies under consideration for investment by the CFB. Develop written assessments.
 	Participate in in-person meetings on a weekly basis with faculty innovators and emerging companies to provide strategic guidance in intellectual property, competitive analysis, regulatory strategy, manufacturing, company formation and other issues related to commercialization strategies.
 	Actively manage a project portfolio of funded technologies ensuring milestones are met and will add commercial value.
 	Assist faculty in the development of applications for funding.
 	Assist clients to develop effective fundraising strategies and materials.
 	Participate in CFB technology and business development initiatives including the Boot Camp, Strategy Sessions, Long Island BioMentor Service and Life Sciences Summit.
 	Help source and conduct due diligence on emerging company candidates for the Life Sciences Summit.
 	Consult with CFB on specific technologies regarding commercialization and viability for moving forward. 
 	Consult with CFB clients on milestones required for licensing, strategic partnerships, investment, and/or manufacturing.
 	Consult with CFB staff on client work, intellectual property, as well as patent, regulatory, commercialization strategies as needed.
 	Consult on course content for CFB programs such as the Innovation Boot Camp and Fundamentals course. Serve as instructor or guest lecturer as needed.
 	Review, interpretation, and advice of patents, websites, articles related to specific technology. 
 Required Qualifications:
 	Direct experience in the management of business and technical issues associated with advanced bio-based technology commercialization, including:

 	 Due Diligence
 	 IP Strategy
 	 Fundraising
 	Product development
 	 Regulatory
 	Manufacturing (preferred)
 	Sales and Marketing (preferred)
 	 Licensing


 	Technology development experience in working with faculty-members and entrepreneurs seeking to commercialize early-stage technologies. 
 	Experience in technology development and initial IP landscape review and strategy development.
 	Experience in the grant application review and the management of approved grants, including the identification and achievement of milestones that have material commercial value.

Progress Reports

Progress reports detailing meetings held/attended, project development issues, priorities, and other issues of importance are required on a monthly basis. 

Time Commitment

 	No less than one full day per week.
 	Must be available to meet onsite and in-person with CFB staff and clients as needed and required by the CFB.
 	Ability to respond to urgent requests and to fill in as needed is desirable.

 The CFB seeks proposals from qualified providers who have the expertise and desire to support the technology and business development objectives of the CFB.                     [post_content] => Stony Brook University-led initiative to accelerate commercialization of biomedical discoveries

STONY BROOK, AND MANHASSET, N.Y. – April 21, 2016 – The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, the research arm of Northwell Health, announced that the Feinstein Institute will be joining the Long Island Bioscience Hub (LIBH).

Established with a National Institutes of Health grant in 2015, Stony Brook's Center for Biotechnology is the lead administrative institution for the LIBH, an NIH-designated Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH). It is one of three such Hubs in the country, the mission of which is to accelerate the translation of biomedical discoveries into new drugs, devices, and diagnostics to enhance health and improve patient care. The Feinstein Institute joins LIBH members Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The addition of the Feinstein Institute fulfills one of the Hub’s goals of coordinating comprehensive technology commercialization efforts across all four major bioscience research institutions on Long Island.

“We look forward to working with the Feinstein Institute, and their involvement in the Long Island Bioscience Hub further enriches the region’s burgeoning innovation economy and entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Clinton Rubin, PhD, Director of the Center for Biotechnology. “The Feinstein Institute is a world leader in multiple areas of biomedical research, and their expertise will complement the groundbreaking work being done at Stony Brook, Brookhaven Lab, and Cold Spring Harbor.”

“The Feinstein Institute’s focus is on advancing science, treating disease, and bringing healthcare innovations to patients,” stated Dr. Kevin Tracey, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Feinstein Institute. “Our partnership in the Long Island Bioscience Hub will help ensure that scientific breakthroughs emerging from our research enterprise progress into the commercial sector where they can ultimately impact patient care. We see the Long Island Bioscience Hub as a great opportunity to accomplish our mission.”

The LIBH is connected to a network of National Institutes of Health-designated “proof of concept” centers that include the three REACH centers and three additional National Centers for Accelerated Innovation. Collectively, they are developing best practices for the commercialization of academic innovations. The Hubs & Centers also have access to resources at the federal level including the US Patent & Trademark Office, Food & Drug Administration, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to provide guidance at the earliest stages of technology development.

The LIBH will provide funding for feasibility and proof of concept studies at the four Long Island partner institutions, and coordinate access to expertise in areas required for early stage technology development, including scientific, regulatory, business, legal, and project management. The Hub will also facilitate introductions to strategic industry partners and early stage investors.  The LIBH announced its first round of technology development awards in December 2015, committing approximately $900,000 to thirteen projects. The second round of funded projects is expected to be announced in April 2016.

In addition to the Long Island Bioscience Hub’s institutional partners, support for the initiative has been provided by the Research Foundation of SUNY and Empire State Development. Total investment in the Hub over the next three years exceeds $8 million.
