Applications are now open for the 12th BioREACH Award Program from the Center for Biotechnology, which provides $50,000 in translational research funding for Stony Brook faculty and postdoctoral researchers to generate the evidence needed to advance promising innovations to the next stage of development.
BioREACH funds milestone-driven studies and welcomes biomedical innovations as well as platforms, tools, computational technologies, and other enabling technologies with the potential to contribute to solutions addressing unmet needs in health.

The Center for Biotechnology (CfB) has helped advance some of Stony Brook University’s most impactful biomedical innovations, among them the yeast two-hybrid system, Xiaflex®, ReoPro®, Oracea®, and 3D virtual colonoscopy. The CfB has supported more than 475 faculty-led translational research projects and contributed to 306 license agreements generating $51 million in royalty returns to the University.

The next HHS SBIR/STTR application deadline is less than two months away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 5 pm local time. (Note – the standard deadline falls on September 5, a federal holiday, so the revised deadline is September 6).
Make sure you are registered! The 5-step registration process may take 6 – 8 weeks, so it is important to start now. All registrations must be completed prior to the application being submitted, and the System for Awards Management (SAM) registration must be updated annually. Learn more about the five required registrations, here.
Don’t be shy - speak to an HHS SBIR/STTR Program Manager! It is critical for success that applicants speak to a program manager before submitting! You should send the program manager a non-confidential abstract or executive summary of your research topic, including a description of your technology, which may include your specific aims. After you connect via email, you and the program manager may decide to set up a call to discuss your application in more detail. For questions about who to contact, please email sbir@od.nih.gov.
ASSIST vs. Downloadable Forms - You may submit your application using ASSIST or the Downloadable Forms method, starting on March 5, 2016. Please select the "Apply Online Using ASSIST" button, or the "Apply Using Downloadable Forms" button within the SBIR/STTR solicitation. View the ASSIST webinar materials here.
Be sure to use the Annotated SF424 SBIR/STTR Form Set in conjunction with the SF424 R&R SBIR/STTR Application Guide (FORMS-D) to guide you step-by-step through the application process. Remember – The standard due dates occur on September 5, January 5, and April 5. The standard due dates apply to all SBIR/STTR solicitations that follow the Standard Due Dates, including the SBIR/STTR Omnibus solicitations and the Commercialization Readiness Pilot Program solicitations. The Center for Biotechnology was thrilled to help Stony Brook University’s Office for Research and Innovation (OR&I) organize their second Wolf Den event on February 12, which featured three CFB Affiliated biotechnology entrepreneurs: Eve McDavid, CEO and founder of Mission-Driven Tech, Raza Hassan, CTO and co-founder of IAMBIC and Christopher Ashdown, CEO and co-founder of Lahara Bio
Attendees heard from each of the featured innovators about various topics they have faced while launching and building their ventures. The speakers were also able to highlight how they have worked with and access the resources of Stony Brook University with support from the Center for Biotechnology.
The goal of the event is to help build the innovation and entrepreneurial community not only at Stony Brook University but in the region as well. Read the full write up of the event on SBU News.

MIDI Medical Product Development, recently cut the ribbon new headquarters in a newly constructed Medical Center of Excellence, within Smithtown’s Village of the Branch.
The 15,100 square foot facility is accelerating MIDI’s rapid growth and presence in the medical/healthcare product development industry. The site was chosen based upon its pristine location, professional environment, and proximity to their collaborating partner Stony Brook University Medical Center.
MIDI specializes in meeting FDA regulatory standards for medical devices and provides market research and product engineering and design services for the biotech and medical industries.
