Attention Stony Brook University Faculy and Staff: Applications for the second cycle of the President’s Fast Impact Fund (FIF) opened August 3, 2026. Open to all Stony Brook faculty and staff, this special initiative supports immediate-impact projects that can be launched quickly and deliver results within six to ten months.
The FIF provides awards of up to $300,000 focused on low‑investment, high‑reward initiatives that create visible, positive change. Examples of projects that would be considered include specialized equipment or technology acquisitions, pilot programs or proof‑of‑concept initiatives, targeted renovations or seed funding, among other opportunities.
All proposals must include a customized, high-level budget and be endorsed by the relevant vice president or dean with authority to implement the project. Applications for the August cycle will be available beginning August 3 with submissions due Friday, August 21 by 5 pm, ET. The Center for Biotechnology team recently ventured out to San Francisco for BIO’s annual International Convention. Through the support of Empire State Development and the Long Island Bioscience Hub, the Center for Biotechnology was able to support six Long Island emerging biotech companies to attend the meeting: Alpha-1 Biologics Corporation, Codagenix, Inc., DepYMed, Inc., iCell Gene Therapeutics, PhD Skin Care LLC and Vela Therapeutics. These companies were joined in the New York Pavilion by more than two dozen other companies and entities representing New York State.
Long Island and New York City regional companies Alpha-1 Biologics, Vela Therapeutics, Intrommune Therapeutics, PainQX, Serendipity Biotech, ENB Therapeutics, and QuickSilver Biosystems all were recipients of grants from Empire State Development and NewYorkBio which also assisted their participation in the event. These companies were tapped to present in the New York Pavilion along with six other companies from upstate New York.
Envisagenics, ENB Therapeutics, PainQx, QuickSilver and Abcombi BioSciences, all New York State Companies, were invited to participate in the BIO 2016 “Start-Up Stadium” which provide start-up companies with the opportunity to pitch to key members of the investment community, venture philanthropy groups, and BIO attendees. The participating investors provided live feedback and judged the sessions.
In addition, six Long Island Bioscience Hub faculty members were invited to participate in the meeting for the first time. These NIH-REACH program supported faculty attended with the goal to learn more about the commercialization process, how it applies to their translational research, and to engage in the partnering process and meet with potential strategic contacts. Center staff met with over 40 strategic partners over the course of the meeting and follow up is underway.

[post_content] => The Long Island Bioscience Hub (LIBH) is seeking experienced BioEntrepreneurs-in Residence (BEIRs) to launch new bioscience ventures in the Long Island, New York region. Company formation will be based upon commercially promising biomedical technologies emerging from Stony Brook University (SBU), Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
To help facilitate this process, the LIBH will provide:
- modest retainer/milestone payments to BEIRs for a predetermined period of time
- access to technology development funding on a competitive basis
- senior staff support to assist with commercialization strategies
- office space
- access to experienced industry advisors
- introductions to investors and professional services
BEIRs will also have access to the resources of the LIBH including: faculty expertise, core research and engineering facilities, libraries, business incubators, the 245-acre Research Park, and a suite of end-to-end economic development programs. BEIRs will be responsible for evaluation of biomedical technologies available for license from LIBH partner institutions. BEIRs will ultimately select specific technologies to form the basis of a company, and will be required to develop detailed commercialization strategies, business plans and investor presentations. BEIRs will negotiate and execute option and/or license agreements with LIBH partner institutions as may be appropriate, secure capital from both public and private sources, and exit the BEIR program to lead the Long Island- based company as CEO. BEIRs will also provide guidance to entrepreneurial faculty members and participate in technology reviews and other meetings as deemed appropriate.
The most compelling BEIR candidate(s) will possess domain expertise and technical proficiency in the life sciences or engineering, as well as business acumen and industry experience, particularly in early stage technology commercialization, new venture creation, and fundraising. Advanced degree in life sciences, engineering, business and/or law are preferred. Terms of engagement dependent upon individual circumstances. BEIRs will report to the Center for Biotechnology Advisory Board.

The LIBH, was established by the Center for Biotechnology (CFB), a New York State Center for Advanced Technology, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, and with additional support provided by the National Institutes of Health REACH initiative (Research Evaluation And Commercialization Hub), Research Foundation for SUNY, and Empire State Development. The LIBH will foster the development of therapeutics, preventatives, diagnostics, devices and research tools emerging from LIBH partner institutions that address diseases within the NIH's mission.

[post_content] => The NIH and CDC have released the annual SBIR Contract Proposal Solicitation (PHS 2020-1), with a submission date of October 23, 2019, 5:00 PM EDT. Please follow the directions in the solicitation very carefully. You must respond exactly to a topic in the solicitation.
